Looking for classic Christmas movies? This Christmas movie list is your guide to the best classic holiday movies.
I can remember as far back as around eight years old, watching Christmas movies with my entire family.
My sisters would turn the lights off, my brother and I would grab the popcorn while my mom made us all hot chocolate, and my dad would press play on our favorite Christmas movie – Home Alone.
Watching these Christmas movies with my family has always been a tradition to bring my whole family together, and I remember snuggling between my sisters, quoting every line, word for word.
Fast forward, several years later, as an adult, I still love revisiting these movies that shaped my Christmas with my family.
They bring back the warmth, charm, and excitement, and always remind me to believe in magic even when I can’t see it.
If you, too, missed the nostalgia and warmth of Christmas movies, then this post will transport you back to childhood memories you didn’t even realize you miss.
This post is all about nostalgic Christmas movies.
The Best Classic Holiday Movies To Get Into The Holiday Spirit
Whether it’s a Christmas movie thats about having hope or believing in miracles, nothing gets us into the holiday spirit quite like curling up with the classics that defined our childhoods and shape our holiday memories.
So, as the season unfolds and the lights start to twinkle, I hope that Home Alone (my all-time favorite) and The Family Man, my family’s favorite, become part of your family’s story.
So, if that’s the case, keep scrolling—consider this your guide to the best classic holiday movies.
12 Must-Watch Christmas Movies For Everyone
1. Home Alone (1990)
When you’re trying to get into the holiday spirit, this movie hits differently.
It’s the one Christmas movie I’ll happily rewatch a hundred times and still laugh like it’s the first time I’m seeing it.
Home Alone is an early ’90s classic centered on an eight-year-old boy (Kevin) who is accidentally left at home during the Christmas holidays when his large, chaotic family rushes off for their Christmas vacation.
At first, Kevin is thrilled—he eats whatever he wants, jumps on the bed, watches grown-up movies, and enjoys total freedom. But the fun takes a turn when two burglars, Harry and Marv, target his home.
The task of protecting his home falls on him.
It’s funny, ridiculous, and captures the late 90s perfectly.
2. The Family Man (2004)
I stumbled upon this movie two weeks after feeling like getting into the Christmas spirit early, and I am so glad I did.
The family man will not only remind you of the true spirit of the Christmas season, but by the end, you will be inspired to give love a second chance.
It follows Jack Campbell, a highly successful businessman who believes he has everything he could want—until a mysterious encounter on Christmas Eve sends him into a glimpse of a life with a wife and kids.
At first, Jack is confused, frustrated, and desperate to return to his old world. But as he spends more time with his wife (Kate) and the kids, he begins to see the beauty, comfort, and joy in this simpler life.
By the end, he discovers true love and happiness he didn’t know he was missing.
3. Scrooged (1988)
Regarded as one of the best Christmas films of all time, this Christmas comedy will impress you with its hilarious plot and screen playing.
When a cynical and cruel television executive forces his staff to work on the holidays, he is visited by three eccentric and unforgettable ghosts—the Ghosts of Christmas past, present, and the future who try to rejuvenate his Christmas spirit.
Will Frank begin to realize how much he has lost—and how much he still has the power to change?
4. Miracle on 34th Street (1994)
I must admit that this moment is the most adorable pick of them all.
It tells the story of a bright, kindhearted, but skeptical little girl who doesn’t believe in Santa Claus—mostly because her practical mother raised her to only trust what she can see.
But everything changes when they meet Kris Kringle, a kind, gentle man hired to play Santa at a New York department store.
His warmth and sincerity begin to touch everyone around him, including her mom, who slowly starts to believe in magic again
5. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
If everywhere in your house is usually chaotic during the holidays, you’ve got to get this classic on your Christmas movies list.
It follows Clark Griswold (an unlucky dad), who attempts to create the perfect Christmas for his family. But from the moment he decorates the house with lights, everything turns into a hilarious disaster.
The turkey is burnt beyond repair, the pets are acting wild, and an unexpected guest shows up, turning the Griswold holiday into a whirlwind of comedy and chaos.
With an 80s charm, this movie is chaotic, cozy, and utterly hilarious, so grab your hot cocoa, fluffy socks, and prepare for laugh-out-loud moments with your family.
6. A Christmas Story
If you’re looking for a family movie night that has everyone laughing—kids, parents, and grandparents—this is the one!
It starts with a young boy’s determination to get his dream Christmas gift.
It’s only a few days before Christmas, and all little Ralphie wants is a Red Ryder BB gun.
But every adult insists he’ll just “shoot his eye out” with such a dangerous toy, leaving Ralphie to go on an adventure of hilarious efforts and misadventures to get his dream toy.
A Christmas story is guaranteed to bring laughter, warmth, and that perfect festive feeling to your whole family.
7. One Magic Christmas (1985)
Now this movie is perfect for a slow evening with the whole family snuggled on the couch.
It’s sentimental in that classic Disney way—soft, magical, and comforting.
It follows Ginny- a hardworking mother who is so overwhelmed with her adult responsibilities that she’s lost her belief in Christmas.
Meanwhile, her daughter (Abby), who’s full of wonder, is determined to save Christmas from Ginny’s poor attitude.
With the help of a Guardian angel (Gideon), Ginny rediscovered the meaning of Christmas and the love that surrounds her.
8. Dr Seuss, The Grinch
If you love humor, heart, and the festive magic of Christmas, you’ve gotta watch this classic.
It’s a witty comedy about a green creature – the Grinch, who’s just not into the joyful spirit of Christmas.
Annoyed by the town’s joyful holiday spirit, he hatches a plan to steal Christmas from them by taking all the presents, decorations, and food.
As a little girl, this was one of my favorite Holiday films, and it is still a must-watch every Christmas.
After dressing like Santa Claus and stealing all the gifts, decorations, and treats, the Grinch realizes that Christmas is more than gifts.
It’s about love, family, and community, and his heart grows three sizes as he learns the true meaning of the holidays.
9. Eloise at Christmastime
This Christmas classic is perfect for teaching the little ones kindness, generosity, and the magic of helping others.
The protagonist, Eloise, is a mischievous six-year-old girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.
With a mission to make this Christmas unforgettable, she gets into hilarious adventures while trying to help her friends keep holiday cheer alive, and even reunite people in need of a little Christmas magic.
10. The Santa Clause
This Christmas, Santa Claus will pull you straight on the snowy streets to the twinkling lights of the North Pole.
The film follows a heartwarming story about a divorced dad who accidentally kills Santa Claus, which also unknowingly triggers “the Santa clause”- making him the new Santa.
Scott’s transformation into Santa is both hilarious and heartwarming, which will make every member of your family smile, laugh, and sometimes tear up.
11. The Polar Express
This Christmas, the Polar Express will capture the hearts of your little ones.
The story begins with a young boy who boards a mysterious train and begins an unforgettable journey to the North Pole.
Along the way, he meets other children, faces thrilling adventures, and has an extraordinary experience that changes his heart forever.
12. The Christmas chronicles
Now this classic Christmas movie will have your entire family curled up under a blanket with hot chocolate.
The Christmas Chronicles follows siblings (Kade & Teddy) who are determined to capture Santa on camera on Christmas Eve.
But when their plan accidentally causes Santa’s sleigh to crash and his magic hat to go missing, Christmas is suddenly in danger.
It’s fun, heartwarming, and full of that adventurous Christmas sparkle that makes December feel exciting again.
